John Bates was born in Whitechapel, London in 1835, and is recorded as being a gunsmith when he enlisted aged 21 in 1856
He served from the 9th April 1856 to 17th August 1889.
Promoted to armourer Sergeant on the 22nd March 1857
He is also entitled to the L.S.G.C.
