Raymond Harold Smith was born on the 27th April 1922 and enlisted on the 15th March 1941 into the Royal Air Force.

He takes various courses, include on the Sycamore and Whirlwind helicopters. in 1956 and 1958.
He is recorded as having special experience on Meteor, Havard Oxford, Jet Provost and Gnat Aircraft, Whirlwind and Sycamore helicopters, and trained in Dye crack detection methods.
