George Gower was born on 27 July 1857 at St. Pancras, London, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 19 September 1873.
Advanced Able Seaman on 1 December 1877, he was posted to H.M.S. Thalia on 27 July 1882, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Egypt.
Promoted Leading Seaman on 8 January 1883, he was shore pensioned on 6 August 1885.
