India General Service, 1895, clasp “Waziristan 1901-02”
to – Lieut. A. R. Withers, 32nd Pjb. Pioneers (Punjab Pioneers)
A scarce single clasp to a British officer. Appears to be his only medal.
Born in 1878 and served initially in the Staffs. Militia and commissioned into the South Staffs Regt. on 21st April 1900.
To Indian Army.
He transferred in 1902 into the Indian Cavalry (16th Lancers) but was injured in a polo match in 1910, which seems to have brought an end to his active career. He retired from the army in 1913.
His later career implies a sad decline – debts, marital cruelty and divorce.
NOTE – A “Mr” [not “Lieut”] A. R. Withers is on the roll for the 1903 Delhi Durbar medal as an extra ADC to a Lieut. Gov.. We do not know if it is the same man.
