Joseph O’Brien was born on 8 January 1844, and educated at Q.C. Cork and Ledwich School, Dublin; M.A. 1869;

Assistant Surgeon, 1 April 1870;
Surgeon, 1 July 1873.
Served on the North-East Frontier, Naga Hills 1879-80 and action of Konoma (Despatches G.G.O.s No. 123 and 405 of 1880, medal with clasp).

He retired on 19 August 1898, and died at Instow, Devon, on 29 December 1921.
His brother B O’Brien was also a Surgeon in the indian army.
