J.E Ramsay was born in Stranton, West Hartlepool and enlisted in Richmond on the 18th January 1932, a joiner by trade.
He was posted to the 2nd battalion Green howards in India on the 9th August 1932 and served with them on the North West Frontier 1036-39. The battalion continued to be stationed in India during the second world war.
