Indian Mutiny, clasps, Lucknow, Defence of Lucknow – T. Watson, 78th Highlanders
Copied service papers show Pte Thomas Watson was born in Redcliff, Deptford, Kent, in 1827 and served from April 1845 to April 1865. They also confirm that Watson received an additional year’s service towards his pension due to him being engaged in the Defence of the Alum Bagh. His papers also show that he is entitled to the India General Service medal 1854, clasp Persia.
The 78th took part in the recapture of Cawnpore in July 1857 and then in the reinforcement of Lucknow, strongly defending the residency until it was relieved in November 1857. The regiment won eight Victoria Crosses during the campaign and was hailed as the ‘saviour of British India’ and feted for its conduct at Lucknow.
