Maharajpoor Star, 40th Regiment casualty.
Maharajpoor Star, 29th December 1843, Private James Cafs. H.M. 40th Regt. (Engraved in running script)
981 Private James Cafs was born in Thomas Town, Kilkenny in 1818, he enlisted into the 40th Regiment on the 21st June 1836.
He served in the East Indies for 11 years and Scind / Afghanistan for 3 years 11 months.and was discharged on the 22nd May 1848.
He is recorded as being wounded at Maharajpoor in the left side.
The medical report on discharge records that he was suffering from a Cataract to his left eye causing defective vision and is thus unfit for further service. It also records his wound at Maharajpoor and states this has not contributed to his Cataract.
Condition – GVF, some damage to the points of the star.
