National Prize in Science 1865.
A very attractive silver medal, awarded by the Dept. of Science and Art.
These national awards were conferred annually in gold, silver and bronze as prizes for examination success and achievement.
Impressed round rim : George Gillford Inorganic Chemistry 1865.
Gillford was a Bristol man, traceable in local censues from 1841-1911, and career analytical chemist who worked and lived in Bristol all his life. He died there in 1927 aged 80.
This medal was awarded to him as a member of the Bristol Institute of Science when he was a young trainee in 1865.
He later became Fellow of the Bristol Natural History Society and lectured to the Pharmaceutical Society etc.
Mounted for wear on suspension and ribbon; NEF condition and toned.
