His records state mentioned in despatches as engaged in reconnaissance at Mahala Junction 5th August 1882.
Archibald Bellenden Purvis was a naval cadet 15th July 1878

He was recalled for WW1 service, and served Armed Yacht Zaza, than Zaria, unfit for sea service 19th July 1915, attached Divisional Coast Watching Officer 26th November 1915, returned to Retired List 21st January 1919.
He was commended while serving on HMS Forward in the West Indies when he dived into the sea to free the screw from ropes which had become tangled in it, the regular divers having refused to go down for fear of sharks of which there were a large numbers.
Commander Purvis died 22nd December 1926.
