Pre War Palestine to the Coldstream Guards
General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (2658145. Gdsmn. H. Ward. C. Gds.),
The 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards saw active service in Palestine from 12th October 1938 until mid April 1939 having been despatched there by boat, as a matter of urgency, from Alexandria, Egypt.
Having taken part in the occupation of the old City of Jerusalem in October 1938 (several fatalities suffered) the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards carried out various sweeps of the hostile countryside and Arab villages in what is now called “The West Bank “.
During WW2 the Battalion served in North Africa and Palestine, although we have no evidence that Ward was still serving with them at the time, it is likely as he was with them in Palestine from 1938/39,
Medal – GVF medal has marks to the obverse indicating wear against another medal probably the 1939-45 star.
