Scarce Lushai 1889-92 and Ashanti Star Pair – 4th K.R.R.C, later West Yorks Regiment
India General Service 1854, clasp Lushai 1889-92, 5552 (Pte J Smith 4th Bn K. Rl Rif. Corps), Ashanti Star, un-named.
Joseph Ambrose Smith (alias John Smith) was born in York in 1872; enlisting in 1870 he served until 1902. His papers confirm his entitlement to the IGS 54 with Lushai clasp and the Ashanti Star (also confirmed on medal rolls). Papers also confirm that he transferred from the K.R.R.C. to the West Yorks and his change of service number to 4191. They also show these two medals as his only entitlement.
His papers include confirmation of his use of John Smith as his alias, which was confirmed in September 1893.
It must be noted that in the book by Ian McInnes and Mark Fraser on the Ashanti Star, he is listed as having received the Star with the West Yorks, along with a Boer War pair and LSGC (no mention of the dearlier IGS). However, his service papers only show entitlement to the IGS and Ashanti Star prior to discharge after 1902 and clearly link the two, confirming change of service number etc. We have found no sign of him having served in the Boer War or any entitlement to medals for it – the book seems to have “picked up” the wrong Smith.
A scarce combination of awards.
