New Zealand 1845-66, rev 1846-1847, W. Dunsford, O.S. , H.M.S. Calliope (Only 69 medals with this reverse issued)

William Durnsford (Note spelling of surname) was born in the Parish of St Stephens, Saltash, Cornwall, 27th December 1827

He joined Calliope in July 1845 aged 19 years, 9 moths as Boy 1st class, this being his first entry in a Navy ship.

Promoted Ordinary Seaman 11th July 1847

Discharged from Calliope 9th July 1849, “Paid Off, conduct Very Good”

Served in the Caledonia and Virago. Dunsford next transferred to the Coast Guard and was finally pensioned ashore as a Chief Boatman in Charge in December 1882

He served on HMS Virago in the Pacific Campaign [Russian War] and this ship took part in the naval attack on the forts of Petropavlovsk in 1854  – the biggest action in the campaign – and was with the Pacific Squadron for the rest of the campaign. (No Crimean medal awarded for this active service.)

Differences in the spelling of his surname are noted, Dunsford on his medal and medal roll (PRO:ADM171/16 and on the printed roll.

We can only find one William Durnsford on other records, with no trace of a man with the spelling on the medal / roll, otherwise details match exactly, so undoubtedly the same man.
