South Africa 1877-79, clasp ‘1879’ – 57th Foot

To: 206 Pte J. Love 57th Foot.

A card with the medal states that a W. Love was No 207, and is his brother. Both enlisted on the 5th December 1870 at Winchester.  Muster rolls show he served in the 46th, transferring on the 1st December 1873.

He was invalided out on the 16th March 1880 with remittant fever contracted on service.

He died in London in 1916 having been a coffee-house keeper on Kensal Rd. and a gardener after his army service.

It is probable that Pte Love was with the other 800 men of his regiment at Gingindlovu on the 2nd April 1879
