John Paget was born on the 20th May 1786 in Totteridge, Hertfordshire.
Entred the Navy on 4th March 1800, Lieutenant 20th December 1806, Commander 1st April 1837, Retired as Captain 1st April 1856
His entry in O’Byrne’s Naval Biographical Dictionary :-
“PAGET (CoMMANDER, 1837, T-P., 19; H-P., 28.) JOHN PAGET entered the Navy, 4 March, 1800, as A.B., on board the MINORCA sloop, Capt. Geo. Miller, under whom we find him in the course of the tollowing year employed as Midshipman and Master’s Mate in the operations against the French in Egypt. Quitting the Minorca in Oct. 1801, he served during the next five years, on the Mediterranean and Home stations, in the GREYHOUND 32, Capts. Chas. Ogle and Wm. Hoste, DIOMEDE 50, Capts. Thos, Larcom and Hugh Downman, Unré 38, Capt. Chas. Ogle, and PRINCE 98, Capt. Wm. Lechmere. Being appointed, on the occasion of his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant, which took place 20 Dee. 1806, to the OLYMPIA stoop, Capt. Wm. Taylor, he sailed in that vessel for the Rio de la Plata. He invalided home in July, 1807 ; and was next, between Nov, 1808 and Feb. 1809, employed under Capt. John Surman Carden in the VILLE DE PARIS 110. During that period he assisted in embarking the army after the battle of Corunna. From the date last mentioned Lieut. Paget did not again go afloat until nominated, 22 Jan. 1828, First of the Haner 10, Capt. Chas. Rich, on the West India station. On 11 Jan. 1829 he was removed to the MAGNIFICENT, receiving-ship at Jamaica, of which vessel, it appears, he retained command from 19 Dec. 1831 until May, 1839. He was re-appointed to her 24 Feb. 1842; and on 26 of the following July was transferred to the INAUM, also a receeiving-ship. He has been on half pay since 1843. His present commission bears date 1 April 1837.
Commander Paget married, 15th Sept 1834, at St Ann’s Jamaica, Anna, daughter of Jas, Lawrence Hilton, Esq. Agents – Messrs, Stilwell.”
He died on the 21st January 1857. and was buried in Old Brompton Cemetery Kensington
His obituary in the Morning Herald, London on 24th January 1857 reads:-
“DEATH OF CAPTAIN JOHN PAGET.
Captain John Paget (1856) died on the 16th inst., at Brompton, in tho 71st year of his age. Ho entered the navy March 4, 1800, as A.B., on board the Minorca sloop, Captain George Miller, under whom we find him in the course of the following year employed as midshipman and master’s mate in the operations against the French in Egypt.
Quitting the Minorca in October, 1801, he served during the next five years on the Mediterranean and home stations, iu the Greyhound, 32, Captains Charles Oglo and William Hoste; Diomede, 50, Captains Thomas Larcow and Hugh Downman; Unité, 38, Captain Charles Ogle; and Prince, 98, Captaln Wm. Lechmere. Being appointed, on the occasion of his promotion, to the rank of lieutenant, which took place Dec. 20, 1806, to the Olympia sloop, Captain William Taylor, he sailed in that vessel for the Rio de la Plata. He invalided home in July, 1807; and was next, between November, 1808, and February, 1809, employed under Captain John Surman Carden in the Ville de Paris, 110.
During that period he assisted in embarking the army after the battle of Corunna. From the date last mentioned Lieutenant Paget did not again go afloat until nominated, Jan. 22, 1828, first of the Harpy, 10, Captain Chas. Rich, on the West India station. On Jan. 11, 1829, be was removed to the Magnificent, receiving-ship, at Jamaica, of which vessel, it appears, he retained command from Dec. 19, 183I, until May, 1839. He was re-appointed to her Feb. 24, 1842; and on the 26th of July following was transferred to the Inaum, also a receiving-ship. He had been on half-pay since 1813, until he received the invitation and accepted the terms of the Admiralty, during the past year, of retirement with additional pay and the rank of captain.”
