Edward Stewart Augustus Baynes, was born in Pimlico, London, on 25 June 1889.
Shortly after studying Architecture at Radley College, Oxford, he was commissioned into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 13 November 1914, for service during the Great War. He served on the Western Front with the 11th Battalion from 21 July 1915 and, advanced Temporary Captain, was wounded on the Somme.
Post War he joined the Department for Overseas Trade, serving in numerous posts across the globe as a United Kingdom Trade Commissioner, for which he was awarded the O.B.E.
A keen interest in Lepidoptera led the publication of ‘A list of British Butterflies’ in 1960, followed by ‘The revised catalogue of Irish Macrolepidoptera in 1964.
He died in Dublin in 1972.
