A RARE Naval General Service Syria, to a Royal Artillery recipient.
Naval General Service 1793-1840, clasp, Syria, Michael Donaghie.
Michael Donaghie was born in 1806 in Ardstraw, Tyrone , Northern Ireland.
Served on H.M.S. Pique at Syria, the original roll shows him as RMA.
British Battles and Medals list of Military recipients of the Naval General Service Medal shows him as being a gunner in the Royal Artillery.
His papers show him as serving for over a year “on the Syrian coast”.
He was tried by court martial for being drunk, on one occasion using improper language to his new commanding officer; again to an N.C.O. and is noted as suffering from Habitual Drunkenness. His name appears 18 times in the defaulters book.
He served from 1st January 1826 to 13th July 1847, spending most of 1838 and early 1839 in prison.
His medical report notes he suffered from Chronic Rheumatism , and was discharged as being unfit for further service. aged 40 years 6 months.
