Description
A Scarce India General Service 1908, clasp, Waziristan 1921-24 to a Sepoy in the Border Regiment.
India General Service 1908 (Geo V), clasp, Waziristan 1921-24, 852 Sep. Bhagwana Singh. Border R.
Between c. 1920-35, each British regt. on garrison duty in India was assigned a platoon of Indian soldiers, each one drawn from one Indian regt. (i.e. not mixed from various regts) – usually 1 officer and about 42 men.
They were generally used for transport duties and with animal transport (pack mules etc.) and in some regts. especially with the machine-gun transport [though not using the mgs].
It was during a period when the British were considering “indianising” the army – extending the role of Indian soldiers and decreasing the level of European commitment [e.g. commissioning more Indians to serve as officers in British regts. in India].
Really stopped by the war and never got above platoon level.
Given that so few served (not many in a battalion of strength c.850+) medals to these men (identifiable by their military rank) are rare.
Condition – GVF+
