Alfred Chadwick was a wireless operation in 90th squadron, flying in Sterling’s.
He was serving in 90th Squadron when his aircraft a Short-Stirling Mk1 – BF442 was lost over the Baltic His aircraft was on a raid on Rostock on the night of the 20th April 1943. Following takeoff nothing was heard of the aircraft.
The letter from his C/O confirms the above, and adds:-
“The wireless operator of any crew is the only link with the airfield, and your son was a strong link for his crew. He was known here for his excellent work, and had soon made a name for himself, both as a technician and as a man. He was a likeable fellow, popular with officers and respected by the men, and I am very grieved that he should have been lost, just when he was doing so well with the squadron.Mt fellow officers and the flying men here have asked me to convert their sympathy to you in this dark hour.
BF442 was claimed shot down by night fighter pilot Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Säwert of the 4./NJG 5, flying a Bf 110 from Parchim airfield.
Alfred Chadwick is recorded on the Telford and Wrekin Roll of honour as well as being commemorated on the Runnymead memorial.
