Robert Culling Henry Donnelly was born in Colchester, Essex, in 1879 and attested for the Royal Horse Artillery at Shorncliffe on 16 June 1897.
Appointed Bombardier on 6 February 1898, he deserted at Shorncliffe on 11 October 1899, and subsequently confessed to having fraudulently enlisted in the Depot of the R.H.A. under the alias Regil Cuthbert. Reverting to his original name, he served in South Africa during the Boer War with ‘U’ Battery from 30 June 1900 to 6 November 1902, and was promoted Corporal on 19 June 1901.
He transferred to the Army Reserve on 25 February 1905, and was discharged on 22 July 1909, after 12 years’ service.
