India General Service, 1908, clasp, Northwest Frontier 1930-31, A.197 Syce Gulaboo, Guides Cavy. (Officially impressed naming)
During the 1930–1931 North West Frontier campaign, the Corps of Guides Cavalry served as a rapid-reaction force stabilizing the vulnerable Peshawar region amid intense civil disobedience and tribal uprisings.
Key Operational Roles (1930–1931):
Peshawar Plain Defense: Following the April 1930 Peshawar riots sparked by the Khudai Khidmatgar movement, the Guides secured vital communication links, policed city approaches, and screened against heavily armed Afridi lashkars (tribal war parties) raiding down from the Tirah mountains.
Khajuri Plain Campaign: From late 1930 into early 1931, the regiment spearheaded operations to occupy the strategic Khajuri Plain west of Peshawar. They provided screen security, long-range reconnaissance, and perimeter defense while British engineers built permanent redoubts and roads to cut off traditional Afridi raiding corridors into lowland settlements.
Mobile Reconnaissance & Escort: Operating in nimble, light-cavalry squadrons, the unit escorted supply columns, patrolled rugged border approaches, and engaged tribal infiltrators in swift skirmishes across broken terrain.
Their key role in containing the frontier crisis earned participating officers and men the India General Service Medal with the North West Frontier 1930–31 clasp.
