William Hambleton was born in Burghfield, Berkshire, in 1875 and attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry at Caversham on 15 January 1894, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment.
He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 13 February 1896 to 16 October 1907, and saw active service with the Mohmand Field Force and the Tirah Expeditionary Force on the Punjab Frontier in 1897-98.
He was discharged at Aldershot on 19 January 1912, but re-enlisted in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 12 October 1914.
He served throughout the Great War at home (not entitled to any Great War medals), and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1921
