Formed on September 11, 1857, Pearl’s Naval Brigade comprised officers and sailors from the Royal Navy’s 21-gun screw corvette HMS Pearl who landed at Calcutta to support British land operations during the Indian Rebellion. Commanded by Captain Edward Southwell Sotheby, this compact naval force spent ten months fighting as an infantry shore unit across North-Eastern India.

Dispatched from Hong Kong alongside HMS Shannon following news of the uprising, HMS Pearl arrived in Bengal in mid-1857. While Captain William Peel’s Shannon brigade deployed heavy naval siege guns, Captain Sotheby organized Pearl’s men predominantly into mobile rifle companies. Armed with Enfield rifles, these bluejackets adapted quickly to infantry skirmishing, operating inland across the river basins and plains of Bihar and the Oudh (Awadh) frontier.

Far removed from the sea, the brigade frequently served alongside Nepalese Gurkha detachments and Sikh regiments. The Gurkhas provided light field artillery support while Pearl’s naval companies served as assault troops:

Operating as part of the Sarun Field Force, the brigade spent months clearing rebel strongholds across northern Oudh. They secured river passages, disrupted rebel movements, and maintained critical supply routes.

Over the ten-month land campaign, the unit engaged in more than 20 separate actions and skirmishes against insurgent forces. Their naval discipline, rapid maneuvering, and concentrated rifle fire allowed them to hold positions against numerically superior rebel formations.

Detachments provided essential flank security and regional containment that directly supported Sir Colin Campbell’s broader strategic campaign to relieve and secure Lucknow.

Condition – NEF with a nice dark tone.
