The 2nd Dragoon Guards, ( Queen’s Bays)
The regiment landed in India in November 1857 and was immediately thrust into the efforts to recapture Lucknow. Under the command of Sir Colin Campbell, the Queen’s Bays proved that heavy cavalry could be devastatingly effective even in the cramped, urban-adjacent skirmishes of the Oudh (Awadh) region.
During the final capture of Lucknow in March 1858, the Bays were instrumental in the pursuit of retreating rebels. Cavalry in this theater didn’t just charge; they acted as the “eyes and ears” and the rapid-response force that prevented the mutineers from reforming.
The most significant contribution of the 2nd Dragoon Guards was their involvement in the relentless pursuit of rebel leaders like Tantia Tope and the Rani of Jhansi’s remnants.
The regiment’s conduct at Nusratpore was particularly noted, where they captured several enemy guns.
