Q.S.A. and Special Constabulary Long Service – Middlesex Regiment. Convicted of living on the proceeds of prostitution.
Queens South Africa, clasps, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek, Cape Colony ( CC has later pinning), 5637 Pte W. Woolstan, Middlesex, Regt.; Special Constabulary L.S.G.C. (Geo V) clasps, Long Service 1929 and Long Service 1939, William Woolston.(Note difference in spelling of surname)
The Medal rolls for the QSA and KSA has the surname spelt as it appears on the Q.S.A. medal, and confirms all clasps on these two medals.
There is some confusion over the name of the recipient, both medals are named to W. Woolston / Woolstan, and which reflects the medal rolls for the Boer war.
However with the medals is a set of service papers for a 5637 Arthur Alfred Woolston, in the Middlesex Regiment, which show him as entitled to the same medals.
It is suggested by previous researcher that they are the same man. We have not been able to prove / disprove this, but there is no Artur,Alfred Woolston serving in the Middlesex Regiment on the Boer war medal rolls.
Assuming they are the same man, he clearly had an interesting life, Alfred’s service papers record that he enlisted on the 29th December 1898 and was born in Islington in 1876.
He served at home to 1st December 1899, South Africa to 6th January 1903, home to 28th December 1910.
His papers record that he was tried and convicted of living on the earnings of prostitution and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment on the 27th June 1910.
An interesting research project.
