Stuart Whetstone was born at Chessington, Surrey on 6 June 1893, the 1911 census records that he was a 17 year old Timber dealer working for his father, George’s timber business, he was then living with his parents at 4 Fairoak Cottages, Chessington, Surrey.
Stuart was conscripted into the army joining at Kingston on Thames on 3 May 1916, he gave his occupation then as Carman. He originally was posted to the 12*h Bn Royal West Kents before being transferred to the 1* Middlesex Regt in France.

This was awarded for gallantry in the actions against the Hindenberg Line 23-24 April.
He was presented with the ribbon for his MM on 29 April 1917 along with 10 other men. According to his medal roll he later served with the 16 and 18th Bn Middlesex Regt.
