British Army Prisoners of War at Briançon Depot, 1809-14 – nominal list
I have published elsewhere on this site a brief listing of some of the British army prisoners of war held by the French in the depot at Givet, 1805-14. This has drawn such a favourable response that I have added below a much longer list of some of the British army prisoners held at the fortress-camp at Briançon in the Alps.
The prisoner of war depot at Briançon, Hautes–Alpes.
Located in the Alps, Briançon was suitably remote as a prisoners’ camp, presumably to discourage or hinder escape attempts and was separated from the other French frontier depots, apart from Mont Dauphin, also in the Alps, by hundreds of miles. It was one of the most populous camps; in January 1814, it is recorded that 3,000 men were held there, the majority being army prisoners (British, German and some others) with fewer royal navy and merchant navy prisoners.
The fortress of Briançon appeared grand and majestic. It commanded the road to Turin and had seven forts. In one named Les Trois Tetes the prisoners were lodged. Unlike Sarre Louis, Sedan and the notorious Bitche, Briançon was not regarded as a “penal camp” – i.e. one with a deliberately harsh regime to which persistent “escapers” or recalcitrant and troublesome prisoners were sent from other camps. Having said that, there was a “Bitche building” in Briançon – a harsh cell complex which was used to house the more difficult “rejects” from Bitche. The prison was described as a sinister place, a fortress of immense strength, cold, set high among snow-capped mountains and rivalling even Bitche in grimness.
Most of the army prisoners came from Spain but, unlike in other camps, they were separated from naval PoWs As was commonly the case [see Givet article] food and facilities were always scarce – water, soap, clothing, bedding etc. Given the Alpine location, intense cold was a real problem for the prisoners.
Unsurprisingly, only one man is recorded as escaping from Briançon, but the figures for escapes are not held to be accurate.
A detailed account of a Briançon prisoner of war’s long march to imprisonment from Talavera in central Spain, across the Pyrenees and through southern and eastern France, as well as his experiences of years in prison in Briançon and his eventual march across France to embark for England, is contained in the Journal of Sergt. Daniel Nicol(l), 92nd Highlanders. It is related in With Napoleon at Waterloo, which, despite its title, is an interesting compilation of accounts and memoirs covering elements of the Peninsular War and the Waterloo campaign. It was compiled by E. B. Low and published by Francis Griffiths, London, in 1911; now available as a reprint and entirely online.
Nicol was one of 1500 wounded and sick men captured when a French force under Marshal Victor re-occupied Talavera on 6th August 1809. He had been wounded at Talavera (27-28th July 1809) whilst serving with the 1st Battn. of Detachments and also gives a good account of their service. [see also article on Crowther on this site]. He lived to receive the MGS with clasps Egypt and Talavera.
Compared to the recorded experiences of other PoWs at other “depots” and moving to and from camps, Nicol records very little in the way of ill-treatment en route to Briançon and indeed records many acts of charity, kindness and sympathy.
This is Nicol’s long journey from Talavera to Briançon – which must be typical of many captured on 8th August 1809 – rendered into simple sections (his own account is more detailed):
From Talavera, August 1809 – in Madrid by Nov. 1809. Held in the Riding School at the Retiro.

Generalised map of Nicol’s route from Talavera/Madrid to the Alps. Over 1600 km.
Selected extracts re Briançon from Daniel Nicol’s Journal.
These are added simply because they are the only descriptions of life in Briançon which I have located. The small town does not seem to have altered much!
Briançon is the most elevated town in France, if not in Europe, being 4285 feet above sea level.
[It] is the last town in France on the principal road to Italy. It lies in one of the passes among the mountains and is very strong both by nature and by art. It is surrounded by a single wall. The streets are narrow and steep; the best buildings are the barracks and stores and a church with two steeples. It lies under the Grand Fort or Citadel … from which it is separated by a small river called the Durance (well-named, I thought!) over which is a lofty bridge [footnote – a single arch of 128 feet and 180 feet above the ravine]
We crossed three drawbridges and entered the garrison; the line walls were mounted with cannon and there are many outworks. On the shoulder of another hill lies a fort which commands this, and a third higher up commands it in turn. Above this is a reservoir which suplies the forts with good water and plenty of it. High above all this is a mortar battery. The place is said to be impregnable but I think it might be starved out very easily.
There are good bomb-proof barracks all around the square which were used for the accommodation of prisoners. There we were taken and put into messes or sections, 33 men in each, one man having charge; three of these sections formed a company … one man taking charge of the whole: he was called a chief of division and made out all returns for provisions, mess untensils, all sick reports etc. and required to be a man that could speak French if possible.
Our provisions were scanty, consisting of 12 oz of bread and 6 oz of beef, with a very small allowance of rice or callarances [=apparently, fresh foodstuff] which were barely sufficient to support nature; we were allowed one sou and a half per day from the French, paid monthly and two sous per day from Lloyd’s Committee. What bedding we had was rotten and full of vermin, from which we could not keep ourselves free. There was a market in the garrison where bread was to be got for three sous per lb., beef for six sous and wine for seven sous the bottle, brandy thirty-two sous. The people in the little villages in the valleys brought milk, meal, potatoes, etc., for sale, but money was very scarce.
[In general, Nicol records that as time went on money – army pay or donations from the various UK funds – did reach them regularly.]

Medal to Henry Studart, 2/83rd. Wounded and captured at Talavera and held at Briancon until transferred in 1813 to Givet.
On the 5th November [1810] the snow, which we had seen at a distance began to come down and fell three feet the first night and continued until it was nine feet deep. This made us sit round the stoves; a kind of sulphury coal dust got among the hills was brought to us, this when slaked with water and wrought into balls made a strong fire. At length we got clothing served out, this made us look more respectable and our condition mended every day after this…. On 25th December, Christmas Day, a great many had something extra to eat and drink.
January 5th, 1811, Saturday, a dreadful cold day with wind and snow and pieces of ice flying about. We had to go to the town every fourth day for bread. This chanced to be one of the days for this duty and some men did not get the better of it for a long time [because of the cold?]. Our windows which were only oiled paper, were battered in by the storm. We made roads through the snow, and when the weather cleared up got out again, after being closely confined for a long time; few people but those who have felt it can imagine what a winter is in the Alps. Our chief amusements were playing cards, dominoes, etc., and mending our clothes.
All the waste ground about the garrison was converted into gardens and patches were sold or let out to the prisoners by the Marechal des Logis. I paid 60 sous for a piece and erected a kind of house with stones. This was called the head quarters of the 92nd regiment. And there I sat many an hour writing this narrative; at other times digging and planting or watering, but I never had a crop that came to maturity. So my French Lairdship brought me little profit but it was an employment to me and I had the pleasure of having a place to myself.
We passed this winter [1811] in a more agreeable manner than we did last. Christmas was kept in grand style, big loaves, sirloins of beef and plenty of wine and brandy etc. The jollification was kept up by some as long as they could raise the wind, and the new year came in with a great number of blue eyes and broken noses, and credit and money being gone things were at a dead stand until a fresh supply arrived.
All the shoemakers and tailors were taken to Grenoble during the summer [1811] to work for the French.
On the 25th October [1811] there came in about 200 condemned prisoners from Bitch, many officers among them, who had been trying to escape and had been guilty of other misdemeanours. They were closely confined having only two hours’ liberty in the square every fourth day. They caused much trouble in the garrison and abridged our liberty much. [“condemned” here seems to mean having been found guilty of some serious crime after undergoing trial – there is no evidence that they were executed]
On Sunday 17th May 1812 I joined a society of Methodists who had hired a barrack room for a place of worship and prayer meeting. I continued with them until the breaking up of the depot, and received much edification: there might be about a hundred of us. In June we got new beds and blankets, things we had much need of. I was placed in a small barrack room with sixteen men and was very comfortable.
[In November 1812] our regiment [i.e. 92nd] was put on the strength of Lord Blaney’s Committee for pay, after our having received from an agent £8. 3s. 9d. being 3d. per day for 655 days and we received clothing from the committee for 1813. About this time a pawnbroking company was formed and at Christmas many of our men had stripped them -selves of every article of clothing they had and sold their pay for a month to come, at a discount.
[November 1812] Orders came for 600 of the oldest prisoners to march…. On 27th January 181 2 [?sc. 1813], 200 marched for Arras ; 200 next day for Valenciennes … 1st February, 200 for Givet … This gave us more room in the garrison.
The French kept all news from us as far as they could, concerning any defeat their armies had sustained. But it was impossible to hide altogether that they were nearly driven out of Spain and that things were not going on well in the north. 2nd November there fell 4 feet of snow, it then cleared up into frost.
16th November (181 2), we heard of the burning of Moscow and what great things the French had done in destroying the Russian armies. But on the 29th another tale was to be told : that the Austrians were entering Italy with a large army, and that the prisoners of war were to be sent off and the garrison to be put into a state of defence.
MARCHED on Wednesday the 8th December 1813, after being three years and five months a prisoner among the high Alps in this garrison: this is the longest time I have been in one place since I became a soldier. And no prisoner in France could have enjoyed better health than I did, or been more miserable when I entered it or more comfortable when I left it. Some were sorry to have to march at this time of the year, and no doubt since we received a regular supply of money from Britain we were more comfortable here than we would have been with our regiments. For myself I was better prepared for the march now than at any time since I was a prisoner, for I was strong and in good health, had two good suits of clothing, and ten dollars in my purse, which proved ten good friends to me during the winter.
The town and garrison were all in a bustle…. We were paid up to the 24th January 1814, by Lord Blaney’s Committee. There were about 2,300 prisoners in the depot, and we were to march in five divisions.
We trudged along through the snow, every one with a light heart and a merry countenance, the inhabitants coming
and shaking hands with us; they were sorry to part with us and no doubt we had spent much money among them.
When far down the road I took a long look back at the garrison and thought it a dismal abode in the centre of the
mountains among so much snow.
[Hence Nicol, and many others, were marched out of Briançon late in 1813]
Roll of British Army Prisoners.
Notes:
1. This roll should not be regarded as anything like complete.
2. Unlike the simple alphabetical Givet list on this site, the names below are in alphabetical blocks by regiment.
3. Place names and surnames are likely to be garbled on occasion – not all the French clerks were familiar with British (or German) names or locations and wrote what they heard! A good example is that of Pte. Hiram Toy(e) of the 47th, who is recorded in the registers as “Iram Tye”.
4. In some rolls, the recorder referred to all British Privates or Troopers as “Fusilier” – whether they really were or not! For ease of copying, this has been standardised as “Private” for infantry and cavalry unless another rank is clearly indicated.
5. It is helpful that in the Briançon rolls, the prisoner’s place of origin is often given – either as a country (“Ireland”, “Prussia”), county, city, town or village.
6. Place and date of capture are not often given, but occasionally a date of death is recorded. Many are listed as captured on 6.8.09 and were taken after the Battle of Talavera (27-28th July 1809), when the French re-occupied the village on that day. It is interesting to note how many PoWs there are from 23rd Light Dragoons – no doubt captured as a result of their unsuccessful charge at Talavera.
7. Scottish surnames involving Mc, Mac or M’ are usually recorded simply as M’ in the originals (e.g. as M’Donald, M’Intosh, M’Gill etc); in the roll below they have all been recorded as Mc… unless spelled out in full in the original.
8. It seems that most surviving service records for these soldiers (and a few have been “sampled”) make no reference to the fact that their subject had been a PoW. The regimental pay and muster rolls usually do – recording them as “missing” or “prisoner” in repeated entries until they rejoined.
9. Footnotes (e.g. (4)) are found below the list.
